Paint and natural wood finishes are an effective way to protect and decorate surfaces. From flat to gloss, both latex and oil/alkyd paints offer a full range of finishes. The sheen you desire & choose is based on the final look and durability you want to achieve. Make your paint last by utilizing a finish that works.
Adding a finish to any paint job not only protects the paint underneath but protects it from destructible natural causes and helps the paint look like new, longer. Once you have applied the base coats to your paint job, or washed down previously painted surfaces and rinsed them thoroughly, you are ready to apply the decorative finish. Be sure to utilize primer before adding any new paint. This will ensure a more defined and long-lasting finish as well as prepare old paint for the new. Paints generally come in a variety of finishes, including flat, eggshell, semigloss/satin and high gloss. Flat paint is more forgiving and hides flaws well, but it doesn’t stand up well to scrubbing. High-gloss paint is washable and easier to maintain, but it reveals surface imperfections and painting errors.
Consider using a flat finish to hide imperfections and bumps in the wall. Although it can be tough to clean, it doesn’t reflect light,making it great for rough walls. Between satin and flat on the sheen (and durability) scale is eggshell, so named because it’s essentially a flat with no-shine, and it presents a finish with little luster, like a chicken’s egg. Eggshell covers wall imperfections well and is a great finish for gathering spaces that don’t get a lot of bumps and scuffs.
If you want a finish that shows less wear, then a semi-gloss finish could be for you. Be wary that this particular finish reflects a great deal more light so previous imperfections would stand-out. If you want a hard shiny finish, a full gloss finish would be great for the interior of your home.
